“Representative Jason Harper has been a courageous leader in the New Mexico House and I stand by him in his re-election. Rio Rancho has seen great public servants in the past, but none compare to Rep. Harper’s commitment to the people of this community and the families of New Mexico.”

FOR A BETTER NEW MEXICO
“Less Government and Practical Solutions for a Better New Mexico.”
Born and raised in Rio Rancho, I know this town like only a local can. I learned conservative family values, the importance of service, and the value of hard work from my parents, and I grew to love and appreciate the beauty of New Mexico and the wonderful people in our community. My desire to serve Rio Rancho is rooted in my memories of watching my dad serve on the very first Rio Rancho School Board. I remember how hard he and our entire community worked to build the first high school in our town. I also remember the great pride and sense of accomplishment we all felt when Rio Rancho High School first opened its doors.
That experience and others I had with my father instilled in me the desire to be involved in my community to help bring about change for good. My college education began here in New Mexico, with a Bachelors of Science degree from New Mexico Tech, and after a brief stint out-of-town for a Masters of Science from Purdue University, I returned home to earn a Ph.D. from UNM, all in Chemical Engineering.
During my college years, I took a two-year leave to work as a church volunteer overseas, in Hungary, and I learned how to effectively lead a group of 20 culturally-diverse American and Hungarian workers. Living in that formerly communist society deepened my appreciation of the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy here in America.
I married my high school sweetheart, Mary, and we are now in our 17th year of marriage, with four wonderful children, ages six to fourteen.
For the last twelve years, I have worked at Sandia National Laboratories, developing sensors to safeguard our soldiers from chemical and biological threat agents. Popular Science Magazine named my anthrax detector one of the greatest innovations of 2016. In our community, I serve as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts, and as a Sunday School teacher; I’m also on the Advisory Board for the Chemical Engineering Department at New Mexico Tech.
Responsible Stewardship of Your Tax Dollars
During years of economic prosperity, the New Mexico Legislature increased government spending to match increased tax revenue. We are paying the price for those bad choices now with pet programs redirecting your tax dollars from where they are truly needed. I believe New Mexico government can both live within its means and put away for a rainy day, all without raising taxes.
We need legislators who won’t keep kicking the can down the road, but rather demonstrate leadership and make tough decisions now, while we still do have choices.
Fair Tax Policy
Taxes must be low, simple, predictable and fair—no rewarding special interests! Our tax laws should promote business growth and create wealth, not redistribute it.
Growing New Mexico Jobs
High taxes and frivolous regulations are strangling business in New Mexico. When businesses in New Mexico thrive, we all win. Jobs are created, incomes rise, and quality-of-life increases. I support policies that ensure New Mexico is business-friendly, and I will work to make New Mexico taxes more competitive with neighboring states.
- DWI Laws: I will fight to significantly toughen penalties for DWI offenders and keep drunk drivers off our roads.
- Driver’s Licenses: Now that the driver’s license bill has been passed, we need a statement to either reflect the new law or remove this issue entirely. It’s more of a non-issue at this point. I recommend dropping it and substituting the need to repeal the current law and give driver’s licenses only to people who live here legally.
- Gun Laws: I support the freedom of individual citizens to bear arms to protect themselves and their families, and will work for an Enhanced Conceal Carry Law, allowing law-abiding citizens to remain armed in gun-free zones, protecting themselves and their families.
Local Control for Quality Education
The education system in New Mexico is broken. I believe the majority of our teachers, administrators, and school boards are made up of hard-working people who truly care for our children. However, how and what they teach, and when and where they can build schools is dictated by out-of-touch bureaucrats in Santa Fe and Washington.
I support putting greater control over schools into the hands of parents and local communities, who know the individual needs of our children. I support rewarding effective teachers and holding ineffective teachers accountable. We need to end the practice of penalizing teachers for staying home when sick, and also end social promotion—let’s pass student on ability, not age.
Protecting The Family
Families are the single most important unit of society and should be supported and protected.
- Protecting children’s lives, beginning from conception (pro-life).
- Parental rights, such as mandatory parental notification if their minor daughter is having an abortion. Currently, state law prohibits the parents from being told beforehand!

“State Representative Jason Harper has exhibited the ability to work with others within the New Mexico state legislature, moving out state forward. For that reason, I heartily endorse his continued representation of Rio Rancho and Sandoval County in Santa Fe.”

Now, here is a man who knows what he’s talking about. We have a lot of people in this country who are out of touch with reality. At least Jason’s got it right.
Jason is a candidate with great integrity and honesty, and is one of hardest working people I know. Rio Rancho should feel honored to have such a high-quality candidate.
